Alma Mahler (1879–1964), Austria 

Composer, daughter of the Viennese landscape painter Emil Schindler; received private lessons as a child from her mother. She is known above all for her lyrical songs for solo voice. She studied voice wtih Joseph Labor and took composition lessons with Alexander Zemlinsky. She had 14 songs published before the age of 22 and before her marriage to the composer Gustav Mahler, who forbade her to continue composing. Shortly before his death, however, after a crisis in their marriage, he agreed to publish some of her songs and she was able to return to composing.
