Sally Beamish (b. 1956), Scotland

British composer of chamber, vocal, and orchestra music.

Beamish studied viola at the Royal Northern College of Music and later in Germany for the violinist Bruno Giuranna. She was violinist in the Raphael Ensemble, with whom she made six recordings, but she is best known for her work as a composer.

Her breakthrough came after a move from London to Scotland. Since then Beamish has composed a large number of works, including two symphonies, several solo concertos, chamber and instrumental pieces, music for film and theater, and pieces for amateur musicians.

While composer-in-residence with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in Örebro (1999–2002), Beamish composed pieces such as the orchestral work Whitescape! (2000).
