Margaret Allison Bonds (1913–1972), United States

Pianist and composer, educated in the 1930s at Northwestern University in Chicago, where she was one of only a few black students at that time. Continued her studies at the Juilliard School. Founded the Margaret Bonds Chamber Society, whose members were all musicians of color. She wrote pieces for voice and orchestra as well as large-scale works for choir and orchestra, and music for the theater.
