Elena_Kats-CherninElena Kats-Chernin, (b. 1957), Uzbekistan and Australia

Born and raised in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan. Emigrated to Australia in 1975. She studied composition for Richard Toop and later for Helmut Lachenmann in Germany. While resident in Europe, she composed music for theater and the ballet, including theaters in Berlin, Vienna, Hamburg, and Bochum. She has composed four operas, two piano concertos, and a number of commissioned pieces for various ensembles, including a piece for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
