Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (b. 1939), United States

She began her musical career as a violinist and played in the American Symphony Orchestra. Later she attended the Juilliard School where her teachers included Elliot Carter. She was the first woman composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music, for her Symphony No. 1. She has composed for orchestra (including four symphonies), chamber ensemble, and choir.
